Study Guide For Midterm


Here's the list (in Chronological Order) of what we have to know for the midterm:

*Plato and Aristotle: What did they believe? Why were they different?

*The Medieval Period--political and economic structure of the time period: What was the mindset? EVERYTHING GOOD WAS IN THE PAST.

*The Renaissance: Paintings (styles); Why does the Renaissance happen? Why in Italy? How is this time period different than the Medieval period?

*Humanism: Italian Humanism vs. Christian Humanism; Humanist Writers (ex. Petrarch)

*English Renaissance: THINK SHAKESPEARE

*Age of Exploration: What were the explorers looking for? Where did they look? What did they find?

*Protestant Reformation: How did Humanism contribute to the Reformation? What motivated Luther? Why him? Why then? Know the differences between Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, etc. (know transubstantiation and consubstantiation)

*English Civil War: Know the English Monarchs (Stuarts, Cromwell, all of the James and all of the Charles)

*1550-1650, The Iron Century or Era of Civil and Religious Warfare: The development of early nationalism; 30 Years War (begins religious, ends political)

*Scientific Revolution: How does humanism lead to the scientific revolution? Who were the leaders of the Revolution? What did they believe? (Kepler, Copernicus, etc.) KNOW NETWON'S PRINCIPIA MATHMATICA

Absolutism: Who were the kings? (ex. Louis XIV) What was going on? Know state-building, etc.

Enlightenment: Who were the Enlightenment thinkers? How did it play itself out politically and economically (aka Adam Smith)

French Revolution: Burke; Constitutions; National Convention/National Assembly; mini-wars, fighting; Why did it fail?
